I'll be a little more diligent this year, and make sure I make a conscious effort to abstain from meat on Friday's during Lent. I have decided to also continue this after Lent, because there are also some benefits to cutting out meat once a week. Some benefits to having one meatless day a week are as follows:
- Meat, especially red meat are among the highest sources of saturated fats in our diet. Eating meat one day less during the week can help reduce your risk of heart disease and some cancers.
- It can save you money. Buying meat can be expensive.
- A greener planet. Livestock creates almost a fifth of all greenhouse gases and takes up 30 percent of the Earths usable land.
